The kets that are used to represent quantum states are simply a fancy way of representing vectors in a complex vector space. In particular, the state of an n -qubit system is just a unit vector in ℂ2n . Consequently, all the notions that we considered for arbitrary vectors also apply to states. Just as two vectors could be orthogonal, two states can be orthogonal if their scalar product is zero. Just as a bunch of vectors could form a basis, so can a bunch of states, and this basis can be orthonormal if all the vectors within it are pairwise orthogonal. There’s not a lot of mystery ...
