For most of my illustrations, I start with stock images as a reference to draw basic shapes and shading, and then I build upon the foundations with detailing, highlights, deep shadow, and texturing. Sometimes I’ll sketch digitally in Adobe Photoshop and then find stock images to help build a guide, or I’ll use a stock image as the initial inspiration and then work from there in Illustrator.
