Abstract

Butanol (n-butanol) is considered as an excellent fuel substitute for gasoline, superior to ethanol, and has been used as a valuable chemical feedstock in various industries. Biobased production of butanol (biobutanol) through the acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) fermentation process has a history of over 100 years and was the second largest industry in the first half of the 20th century.
