A ladder tells you to climb. A map tells you where you stand and which direction is safe.

The last chapter landed on a claim that runs through the rest of this book: the inner loop got cheap, so the job moved to the outer loop. Writing a change and getting it to run takes minutes now. The pressure shifted to review, integration, verification, and accountability.

This chapter gives you a map for locating yourself in that work. Steve Yegge published eight levels of AI-assisted coding, from near-zero AI up to “build your own orchestrator.” Dan Shapiro published a five-level ladder modeled on the SAE self-driving levels, from spicy autocomplete at Level 0 up to the dark factory at Level 5, where no human writes or reviews code. Both are genuinely useful, and I still reach for them. Both also stack two different things on one line, so that moving up always looks like getting better.
