Chapter 2. Beyond the Ladder: A Two-Axis Map

A ladder tells you to climb. A map tells you where you stand and which direction is safe.

The last chapter landed on a claim that runs through the rest of this book: the inner loop got cheap, so the job moved to the outer loop. Writing a change and getting it to run takes minutes now. The pressure shifted to review, integration, verification, and accountability.

This chapter gives you a map for locating yourself in that work. Steve Yegge published eight levels of AI-assisted coding, from near-zero AI up to “build your own orchestrator.” Dan Shapiro published a five-level ladder modeled on the SAE self-driving levels, from spicy autocomplete at Level 0 up to the dark factory at Level 5, where no human writes or reviews code. Both are genuinely useful, and I still reach for them. Both also stack two different things on one line, so that moving up always looks like getting better. Pull those two things apart and the confusion clears, and you can see where the frontier actually is versus where people are cosplaying ...
