The Step We Often Skip
The most challenging step in creating quality APIs is rooted in spending too little time in discovery and design mode. Often developers jump from “We need a…” to “Here’s the source code” too early. But domain discovery (the discovery required to map the API’s core responsibilities) and API design (translating your discovery artifacts into a workable interface) is not a skill set that is commonly shared with developers and rarely honored by deadline-strapped teams trying to keep up with the ever-increasing pace of feature requests and release schedules.
This is so important that it makes sense to spend a few minutes digging into the value of good design as well as the challenge of fitting that into ever-tightening budgets. And that’s what we’ll do here.
