Chapter 4 Connected AI
As pioneers in artificial intelligence worked to build increasingly intelligent machines, a recurring theme emerged: connectivity. Many elements of the real world are inherently connected—and researchers soon realised their digital models needed to reflect this.
A key motivation behind connected AI lies in its ability to capture the richness of real-world relationships. By modelling data as networks of interacting elements, connected AI systems can reveal hidden patterns, propagate information, and solve problems that are difficult or impossible for isolated or linear approaches.
At first, this took the form of simple linear lists, which later evolved into more complex structures like graphs and trees. Each step forward in connectivity brought new capabilities and better outcomes.
A major turning point came when researchers began to study and replicate the most intricately connected system known to us—the human brain. This line of inquiry led to the development of models that were inspired by the structure of neural pathways and also mimicked their function. These breakthroughs laid the foundation for many of the most powerful advances in AI today.
Overview
Let’s begin with a concise overview of the key ideas, techniques, and motivations behind connected AI. We’ll start by introducing how connected approaches model information as networks of relationships—using nodes, links, and layered structures to represent and process complex connections. This gives ...
