About the Author

Wendy L. Wise is a senior software development manager at Amazon Web Services, where she leads the control plane engineering team for Amazon Aurora DSQL—AWS’s serverless, multi-Region distributed SQL database. With over six years at AWS spanning storage engines, Amazon RDS (Oracle and SQL Server) and now Aurora DSQL, she brings a rare combination of deep database infrastructure experience and hands-on engineering leadership to the subject. Before joining the DSQL team, Wendy managed teams responsible for some of AWS’s most widely used managed database services, giving her firsthand insight into the challenges customers face when adopting new database technologies. She is also an AWS Bar Raiser, reflecting her commitment to technical excellence and high standards.

Wendy wrote this book because she saw a gap: DSQL is architecturally unlike any other managed database, and the engineers building on it deserve a practical, honest guide that doesn’t just explain the features but teaches the patterns, workarounds, and design decisions required to succeed with a truly distributed SQL database in production.
