When Microsoft announced Fabric and its lakehouse capabilities, many of us in the data community had the same reaction: Oh great, another lakehouse implementation. Just what we needed. We’d been burned before by promises of “ground-breaking” data solutions that would solve all our problems. Remember when data lakes were going to replace everything, as we discussed in Chapter 2? Yes, that worked out well – we all got nice data swamps to manage.
After spending considerable time working with the Fabric lakehouse, we can assure you that this isn’t just another vendor slapping lakehouse on their existing tech stack. Microsoft has done something genuinely clever here. They’ve taken the lakehouse concept we discussed in Chapter 2 and woven it into a unified analytics platform in a way that actually makes sense.
