Web services provide a means to extend component functionality across the network between platforms and languages from different vendors. Unlike .NET remoting, however, the types that can be used are much more limited.

Nonetheless, if you start your design from the point of view of the XML Schema specification and then build your WSDL and Web service classes, you will have a much greater chance of being able to interoperate.
