3. Defining, Prioritizing, and Aligning Needs

Defining, prioritizing, and aligning business needs are always a challenge. Every business area believes that its own analytic needs are the most important and gets frustrated when these needs are not met or not met on as timely a basis as they want. The initial challenge is to define business needs effectively so that IT can understand them, prioritize them in light of various area needs, and determine what data and capabilities can be leveraged across business areas. They are one of the key five elements of a BI strategy, as shown in Figure 3-1.
