In the current literature and in media articles, there is often a misrepresentation of the meanings of the terms artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). These terms are often used interchangeably and as synonyms. However, in this chapter, we differentiate between AI and ML. We define AI as a capability, and ML is defined as a set of techniques that can enable us to achieve some form of AI.
