B.1 Introduction

The process of extracting a segment of audio from a longer time domain waveform is found in a number of audio processes such as Short Time Fourier Transform (STFT) frequency domain methods (Chapter 12) and granular synthesis (Chapter 22). The purpose of the extraction is such that the segment can be used in isolation. The length of the segment and its position within the source waveform will usually be determined by the configuration of the audio process.
