I already mentioned the Smart Tool in Chapter 1, if only to recommend that you leave it alone while you learn to edit with Media Composer. Now, however, we’ll examine how this tool can best serve you, now that you’ve got some experience under your belt.
The Smart Tool (Figure 7.1) houses four main editing tools that allow you to manipulate material in the Timeline in various ways: Lift/Overwrite Segment Mode, Extract/Slice Segment Mode, Overwrite Trim, and Ripple Trim.
