PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS
What is this practice and how effective is it?
People deeply dislike performance appraisals and think they are fundamentally flawed, yet they are ingrained management processes in most organizations. While many leaders—including within human resources—would like to abandon them, few know what to do differently and even fewer can summon the courage to act. We examine the evidence for and against performance appraisals and provide some guidelines that will help leaders to think more seriously about abandonment.
