Prologue

Our studies of human behavior and performance were intended to create and evaluate models that would be of use to designers of complex systems. As I discuss in this chapter, we came to realize that these models could directly benefit operators and maintainers of complex systems via training and/or aiding. This realization was central to our transition to building real products and systems, as I discuss in Chapters 5 and 6.
