Why was it that it took Jeff Bezos, instead of someone working in a large bookstore chain such as Borders or Barnes & Noble, to create an online bookstore, and then the Kindle, and then so much more? Why was it Elon Musk—instead of someone at Ford, Renault, or Toyota—who put the necessary oomph (and capital!) behind electric vehicles to suddenly make them relevant? Why did it take two industry outsiders like Garrett Camp and Travis Kalanick to connect the dots, create the gig‐worker phenomenon, and reinvent the taxi industry? Why did it take two Indian entrepreneurs, Manish Sabharwal and Ashok Reddy—instead of the well‐endowed multinational temporary staffing firms—to jump‐start the temporary help industry in India and put millions of Indians to work? Was it their break‐the‐rules mindsets, perhaps? Or, more pertinently, in the industry you want to enter or where you work today, why not you?
