Chapter 5 Television

The decline of European film budgets has coincided with a significant increase in the proportion of film revenues gained from television (Table 5.1). Two conclusions could be drawn from this. The first is that, as European films get smaller, so they become more dependent on television. Television can thus be cast in the role of the saviour of European cinema, albeit on a reduced scale.

The second conclusion is that, as European films become more dependent on television, their budgets get smaller. This would cast television in the role of cinemas most treacherous 'ally'.
