1. An Introduction to Blockchain
The word blockchain started as a computer science term describing an abstract data structure. However, as the technology has become popular and even pervasive, the term has caught the imagination of many. Today, blockchain has many meanings to many people.
The Blockchain
For computer scientists, a blockchain is a series of connected data blocks. Each block of data can store any information, but typically it stores a set of transactions. The information inside a block is represented by a unique hash. Each block’s data content contains the hash of the block that precedes itself on the chain (Figure 1.1).
