Chapter 7. Streamline the Gold Layer

In Chapter 5, we constructed the Bronze layer, addressing the challenge of creating a queryable structure despite the diversity and complexity of source systems. I emphasized the importance of stability and reliability in this foundational layer. Moving on to Chapter 6, our attention shifted toward the Silver layer for enhancing data quality and establishing a robust data processing framework. You learned how to adapt the design of the Silver layer to meet specific organizational needs, tailored for different processing requirements. We wrapped up our discussion with datasets that were thoroughly refined and validated, setting the stage for the next steps.

In this chapter, we’ll continue the exercise by diving into the specifics of designing the Gold layer—the final and most detailed stage of our Medallion architecture. This layer is pivotal for decision making and reporting. It is the crown of data refinement, designed to optimize data for high-performance querying and analytics. It plays a crucial role in supporting critical business functions.

You’ll be using a similar approach to what we used for the previous layers, and you’ll find that the skills you’ve acquired will translate into the context of the Gold layer. This allows you to apply all the learnings to other Delta Lake- and Spark-based environments too. Part of the tutorial also includes constructing the semantic layer, another refinement or abstraction layer that provides a more ...
