8. Networking
Devices of all kinds are most useful when connected to a network. In fact, more and more often, a device can’t do what we want it to do at all unless it’s connected.1 With the expanded set of devices that Windows 8 supports, including tablets, laptops, convertibles, desktops, and e-readers, devices are going to be connected in all kinds of ways and will want to access data over those networks in a way that’s sensitive to the needs of the user and the costs of those networks. In this chapter, we’ll discuss the various kinds of network issues you’ll want to consider before downloading (or uploading) data on the user’s behalf and the various ways to incorporate data from different sources into your apps.
