What Can You Do?

If any group or individual wanted to shut down long-distance 802.11 use, they could do it via the FCC’s Rules and Regulations, or by creating new rules that encourage FCC enforcement of the current rules on owner restrictions and equipment certification. If you are concerned about this lobbying, subscribe to the emailed daily reports from the FCC at http://www.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Digest/.

It’s also helpful to know how to comment on Notices of Inquiry (NOI) or Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). The FCC has public comment periods for both items, but it is up to you to find out about changes that might affect you. Once you’ve researched the issue, submit a good argument that describes why you do or don’t want a particular NPRM to become a new rule. A good page covering NOIs, NPRMs, and the process of commenting to the FCC can be found in the “How Do I...” section of the FCC’s web site (http://wireless.fcc.gov/csinfo/).
