Statistical Inference: Estimation for Single Populations
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The overall learning objective of Chapter 8 is to help you understand estimating parameters of single populations, thereby enabling you to:
- Estimate the population mean with a known population standard deviation with the z statistic, correcting for a finite population if necessary.
- Estimate the population mean with an unknown population standard deviation using the t statistic and properties of the t distribution.
- Estimate a population proportion using the z statistic.
- Use the chi-square distribution to estimate the population variance given the sample variance.
- Determine the sample size needed in order to estimate the population mean and population proportion.
