In this chapter, you begin the exciting journey into shooting with the Rebel T1i/500D. Contrary to what you may have heard, you don't need to know everything there is to know about photography or have a bag full of lenses and accessories to use the Rebel T1i/500D creatively. And if you haven't used a digital single lens reflex (dSLR) camera before, then you are in for a treat in terms of the creative results you can get with the Rebel T1i/500D.

The first step in shooting and controlling exposure is choosing a shooting mode. The Rebel T1i/500D offers shooting modes ranging from fully automatic to fully manual, and many in between. You can choose among different shooting modes at any time. You may find that you enjoy using the automated Sports mode, but for other shots, you may prefer using Aperture-priority (Av) mode. With the T1i/500D, you can switch between modes and be assured of getting great shots regardless of the mode you use.
