Virtualizing File Systems

A virtual file system is an abstraction layer that allows client applications using heterogeneous file-sharing network protocols to access a unified pool of storage resources. These systems are based on a global file directory structure that is contained on dedicated file metadata servers. Whenever a file system client needs to access a file, it must retrieve information about the file from the metadata servers first (see Figure 8-15).
