Understanding Controller Interfaces

When you start up a WLC fresh out of the box for the first time, you will find... nothing much. This is because it has no default configuration and needs you to provide one for it—something you can do in a variety of ways. But before you start configuring anything, you really need to have a solid grasp of the terminology of ports and interfaces specific to the controller first. When I say specific, I do mean specific, because some of these terms' meanings only apply when they're used in reference to WLCs. Believe me, this one fact can confuse things in many ways, so let's get some of that highly specialized WLC terminology nailed down tight!

Ports

On the WLC, a port is the physical representation of an interface. If you survey the front of a WLC like the one pictured in Figure 9.1, you'll see the following port types:
