TPM: Definition

TPM stands for total productive maintenance and is a combination of the following:

  1. Preventative maintenance—completing routine tasks at set intervals to prolong the life of the equipment and to prevent breakdowns from happening in the future.

  2. Predictive maintenance—performing tasks based upon a historical pattern of breakdown or wear. Often companies have several similar machines, and lessons can be learned based upon past breakdowns or wear patterns that can be incorporated into routine tasks, which should reduce the risk of breakdowns.
