Chapter Eight. Distance-Vector Routing Protocols

In Chapter 8 we begin the book’s descriptions of various dynamic routing protocols. This chapter discusses distance-vector routing protocols based on implementations of the distributed Bellman-Ford algorithm. After discussing the principles of distance-vector routing protocols, we consider two protocols:

  • Routing Information Protocol (RIP), one of the oldest routing protocols in the Internet

  • Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP), a proprietary Cisco routing protocol

Distance-Vector Principles

The mathematical basis of the distance-vector routing protocols is the distributed version of the Bellman-Ford algorithm, named after Bellman, the author of its original (centralized) version; and Ford, who first ...
