Understanding the Routing Process
Routers and multilayer switches tie subnets together and use IP addresses to locate destinations on behalf of hosts that are in directly connected networks and on behalf of hosts that may be located many routers, or hops, away. That's because no single router performs the routing process for a host unless the source and destination networks are directly connected, as shown in Figure 11.1.
