Solo instruments and orchestra

Following on from our chapters on orchestral recording techniques, the next thing to consider is how to approach the addition of a soloist to an orchestral layout. A concerto might be written for any instrument and orchestra, and in the case of the concerto grosso, a small group of solo players is involved. From the recording point of view, we would like the appearance of orchestral perspective and depth to be maintained as before but with the addition of a soloist that is performing a central musical role. The soloist therefore needs a certain degree of prominence in the recording while retaining a believable perspective in relation to the rest of the orchestra.
