So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Setting Priorities
After you identify your core values (see the earlier section ‘Focusing on core values’), you have a blueprint to guide the process of setting priorities and taking action.
Although this chapter's focus is an individual's values, the principles of identifying values and living them also applies to a team or larger organisation in the same way. See Chapter 12 for more on coaching teams.
Allowing time to refine values
Two people may have the same set of values, yet behave in very different ways. For this reason, you need to understand how the values translate into behaviour in everyday life and where your priorities lie.
Ollie talked about a disagreement within his family when his son and daughter-in-law were having financial problems. The daughter-in-law accused Ollie of not loving his son because he wouldn't pay his debts. Ollie argued that it was because he loved his son that he didn't bail him out financially. Ollie believed he was demonstrating tough love by showing his son that he needed to take responsibility for his spending. Both Ollie and the daughter-in-law were acting from positions of love, yet behaving in different ways.
