8 Digital pulse code modulation

The sampling and quantisation process described in Section 7.1 forms the basis of pulse code modulation (PCM). While the following information refers to the system as used for international voice telephony channels, the concept can be extended for use with any other form of analogue signal (see also Television signal processing and systems, p. 367). The 8-bit binary coding in sign and magnitude format represents the baseband signal. This may be converted into a ternary or quaternary form to minimise bandwidth and may then be modulated on to a carrier frequency (see also Modulation, p. 199) for transmission either over a cable or radio network.
