8 The Generalized Samuel Numbers

1. Introduction

Throughout this note, A will denote a commutative ring with unit element. For two filtrations f=(In) and g=(Jn) on A, we put v¯f(g)=limn>vf(Jn)n and w¯f(g)=limn>wf(Jn)n, where for an ideal J on A, vf(J)=sup{n;JIn} and wf(J)=inf{n;InJ}. A filtration f = (In) on A is a decreasing sequence of ideals In such that I0 = A and InImIn+m for all integers n,m. The set F(A) of filtrations on the ring A is ordered by f=(In)g=(Jn)ifInJn for all n. The numbers v¯f(g) and w¯f(g) are called the generalized Samuel numbers of the filtrations f and g.
