Most of what you do on a Linux machine involves manipulating files in some manner. You have to know where certain files go, such as binaries, configuration, and user data. You also need to be able to manipulate files from the command line rather than by using a GUI.
A huge component of Linux systems is the manipulation of input, output, and error streams; where the data goes and where it doesn’t go; and how these streams of mostly text are processed from one program to another.
