If you've enjoyed Creative Portraits: Digital Photography Tips & Techniques, I think you'll also find some of my other books useful because they cover areas of photography related to portraiture that I don't explain in detail in this book, particularly:

Creative Black & White: Digital Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2010)

Creative Composition: Digital Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2010)

Creative Lighting: Digital Tips & Techniques (Wiley, 2011)

Practical Artistry: Light & Exposure for Digital Photographers (O'Reilly, 2008)

One of the best ways to learn about portrait photography is to look at the work of great portrait photographers. I'd suggest taking a look at the work of Richard Avedon, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Arnold Newman, and Irving Penn. Some specific books I recommend are:

Richard Avedon: Photographs 1946–2004 (Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2007)

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century (Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2010)

Arnold Newman (Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, 2007)

Irving Penn Portraits (Abrams, 2010)

You might also want to take a look at the following collection of interesting and effective portraits:

Vanity Fair: The Portraits: A Century of Iconic Images (Abrams, 2008)

There are many how-to books aimed at professional photographers and serious amateurs that explain studio portraiture and flash and strobe-lighting techniques. Among these books, my top picks are:

Michael Greco, Lighting and the Dramatic Portrait: The Art of Celebrity and Editorial ...
