At the beginning of this book, I mentioned that the recent trend in web design is to remove the depth of skeuomorphism in favor of a flat aesthetic. That’s fine. Trends come and go and will come and go again. Today’s flat design is tomorrow’s next trend.
One unfortunate result of removing the realistic depth cues is a perceptual loss of physical space and a loss of some of the details that delight visitors. Motion can step in to return some of both.
Animation can help establish physical space by showing how objects move about within the page. Where are the boundaries they bump into? Do some overlap others? Do they appear to move in and out of the screen? Motion can offer some context for how to answer these and similar questions. ...
