Understanding Your Data

Abstract

Much of the literature on data visualization attempts to teach scientists how to prepare data for an audience of non-scientists. There is very little literature that shows scientists how to examine their data, for themselves, preparatory to any further analysis. The purpose of this chapter is to provide data scientists with ways to quickly assess their data, to determine its general content, and to develop some insight into what the data seems to mean.
