The meaning of “data structure” encompasses three aspects – the logical structure, storage structure and operations of data. The logical structure of data embodies the relations between data. The storage of data is the embodiment of data in a computer. The processing of data in practical problems first is to abstract the data and relations within the information and select the appropriate storage structure according to the functional requirements and the amount of data of the problem (in Fig. A.1, the “structure selection” part” lists some examples of simple selection principles); second is to divide modules for separate processing according to functional requirements; third is debugging and testing.
