The Nikon Z50 II has a built-in electronic flash that can be elevated by sliding the switch on the left side of the viewfinder housing forward. Its output is relatively puny—at ISO 200 you’d need an aperture of f/2.8 to fully illuminate a subject just 12 feet away. Nevertheless, the pop-up flash can be quite useful when you need some fill flash to brighten inky shadows; you don’t need to remember to carry an external flash. Unfortunately, the built-in flash tends to be harsh and cast unsightly shadows. When you need more power and versatility, a Nikon SB-series Speedlight or a compatible external flash offered by third parties can be a life-saver.
