I was extremely fortunate to have begun my teaching career at the University of Vermont, where I remained from 1967 until my retirement in 2010. Given that the support of this university has long facilitated my work, and that my research has been informed by my teaching experiences in an undergraduate department of religion, it is appropriate to begin this collection of my essays by acknowledging this debt.
