Design, Deployment and Performance of 4G-LTE Networks: A Practical Approach
by Ayman ElNashar, Mohamed El-saidny, Mahmoud Sherif
Chapter 5Deployment Strategy of LTE Network
5.1 Summary and Objective
This chapter presents the practical deployment scenarios for the LTE (long term evolution) system, including access network (AN) and core network (CN). In addition, it will cover the LTE CN elements and network architecture. Moreover, the high level design (HLD) of the LTE network will be presented in detail to address key design aspects. Practical HLD scenarios will be presented along with a pros and cons analysis. The AN will be presented in detail, including macro sites deployment scenarios and indoor building solution (IBS) (sometimes termed as DAS (distributed antenna system)) deployment scenarios. Also, this chapter will cover infrastructure-sharing scenarios for capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) saving, including antenna/feeder sharing scenarios, single RAN (radio access network) solutions, and coexisting with 2G/3G networks. LTE spectrum options as well as refarming and guard band requirement are also discussed. An LTE business case (BC) will be illustrated to analyze the gain from introducing LTE on top of the existing 2G/3G network. Also, key relevant financial factors will be presented and analyzed. Finally, we will present a case study on a deployment scenario of an LTE network operator inter-operating with another 2G/3G network operator with different PLMNs (public land mobile networks) in the same country to offer voice/data services in both directions ...
