Even though it is assumed that every designer is familiar with embedded programming, we thought as part of the introduction we need to present some of the embedded concepts at this juncture. Generally, every Embedded System is unique and the hardware and software shall become highly specific to the identified Application Domain. Today, almost every household has one or other type of Embedded System in use (smart phone, router, ADSL CPE, modem, video camera, Video Cassette Recorder/Reader [VCR], etc.). If an Embedded System is designed well, then the existence of a processor and related software would not be noticed by the user of the device (refer Table 3.1).
