The Bengal Famine, one of the world’s worst food disasters, occurred in 1943 in British-ruled India. An estimated 4 million people died of hunger that year in India. After gaining independence in 1947, it took India 20 years to realize necessity of food security and it started working on a Green Revolution in 1967.
