Of the motion pictures made over the last century, 99% have been photographed on film. In the last 10 years, developments have been made that enabled major motion pictures to capture images without film, using digital technology.
Until 2000/2001, there did not exist technology that could possibly be a replacement for film—technically, aesthetically or economically.1 In 2001, 5.2% of films released theatrically in the United States were originated digitally. In 2006 that was 12%. In 2008, it was 14%; in 2009, 19%; in 2010, 26%; in 2011, 35%; and in 2012, 49%. It was a slow start for digital.
