In Chapter 9 we referred to Hippolyte Bayard’s Self Portrait as a Drowned Man from 1840 as the first combination print. The history of photographic manipulation reaches almost as far back as the first photographic images. Digital tools extend this history of image manipulations from the subtlety of the slightest tonal range adjustment to the creation of completely fictional imagery.
