3.1 Introduction
In Chapter 1, we discussed the distinction between image processing for human vision applications and for computer vision applications, and the idea that image analysis was an important aspect of both types of applications. In this chapter, after a brief look at the image analysis model, we will delve into the pertinent aspects of the human visual system (HVS) and why an understanding of it is required to develop image enhancement, restoration and compression algorithms.
