Reception of digital TV signals

8.1   Global view of the transmission/reception process

As a summary of the various concepts explained in the previous chapters, and as an introduction to the description of an integrated receiver decoder (IRD or more commonly set-top box), we will briefly and in simple terms review the various processing steps the TV signal has to follow from the source to the display on the end user’s screen.

The upper portion of Fig. 8.1 (similar to Fig. 2.6) illustrates the steps on the transmission side, which has to deliver a multiplex of MPEG-2 programmes on one RF channel:
