Amartya Sen is an Indian economist who won the Nobel Prize in Economics for his contributions to welfare economics, which is the branch of economics that evaluates — and develops measures to improve — individual and collective well-being.

Sen’s work centers on the idea that measuring a country's economic growth in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) doesn't tell the whole story. True economic development requires considering a range of factors, such as education, healthcare, and political freedoms, all of which contribute to well-being.
