3.11 METHOD OF IMAGES

The method of images is commonly used to determine V, , and at any point in free space due to charges above the grounded conductor. It can also be used to determine surface charge distribution ρ_s on the conducting plate. This method cannot be used to solve all electrostatic field problems, but it reduces a complex problem into a simple one. For example, consider an electrostatic problem in which a point charge Q is placed at a distance d above a perfectly conducting plane as shown in Figure 3.20(a).
