3.11 METHOD OF IMAGES

The method of images is commonly used to determine V, images, and images at any point in free space due to charges above the grounded conductor. It can also be used to determine surface charge distribution ρs on the conducting plate. This method cannot be used to solve all electrostatic field problems, but it reduces a complex problem into a simple one. For example, consider an electrostatic problem in which a point charge Q is placed at a distance d above a perfectly conducting plane as shown in Figure 3.20(a).
