Overview. Up to now we have focused on the steady-state operation of nonisothermal reactors. In this chapter, the unsteady-state energy balance will be developed and then applied to CSTRs, as well as well-mixed batch and semibatch reactors. We will use the difference between the rate of “heat generated,” $\overset{\cdot}{Q_{g}}$ , and the rate of “heat removed,” $\overset{\cdot}{Q_{r}}$ , to arrive at the user-friendly form of the energy balance
