Chapter 6. Conclusion: You Are in Control
In the introduction to this report, I said that I wasn’t going to tell you anything about empathy that you didn’t already know. The concepts I’ve discussed here aren’t groundbreaking, but they can be very challenging for people to internalize and master. Most of us aren’t born knowing exactly how to show empathy. Luckily, most of us can learn through trial and error—remember, failure is part of the process of learning—the steps we need to take in order to show empathy daily and contribute to a healthy, collaborative, positive work culture. It takes only one person to begin making positive changes in the office: you can help steer how every conversation evolves by taking ownership of your reaction and moving forward with intention. Remember, when it comes to engaging empathy at work, you are in control.
